Brief History of the PCA

Today there are over a dozen Presbyterian or Reformed denominations in the United States. The PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) began in December of 1973 in Alabama. It shares ties with many other Christian denominations that trace their heritage to the 16th century Protestant Reformation in Continental Europe and the British Isles. Presbyterian and Reformed churches and denominations now exist around the globe in many cultures and languages. They seek to guard and promote the truths of the historic Christian faith (as expressed in the Apostles' Creed and Nicene Creed) and practice.

The PCA organized out of a desire to form a BIBLICAL, REFORMED, and EVANGELICAL denomination. It seeks to serve God and honor His Word through worship, Christian nurture, evangelism, and lives characterized by charity and mercy.

The Westminster Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism and Shorter Catechism express the consensus of our belief. These documents serve as our doctrinal standard, secondary to and derived from the Bible. The Bible, God's Word, is the authoritatively final standard for faith and practice.
